Right after the ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ (CJP) movement successfully forced the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a new digital-first movement is taking over social media. Dubbed the “E20 Janta Party,” this independent citizens’ campaign is directly targeting Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari over the mandatory 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20) policy.
The Rapid Growth: Riding the wave of the CJP’s success, the E20 Janta Party is leveraging the same satirical, digital-first approach. The movement has exploded online, amassing over 285,000 followers on Instagram and over 50,000 on X within days.
The Core Grievance: The government rolled out E20 fuel—a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol—to cut crude oil imports and reduce emissions. However, motorists and transport unions are pushing back hard, arguing that the blended fuel lowers vehicle mileage by 3-5%, increases maintenance costs, and causes abnormal engine wear in older vehicles not optimized for ethanol.
The Demands: The group explicitly states they are not asking for subsidies or free fuel. They are demanding the resignation of Nitin Gadkari (and Hardeep Singh Puri), the freedom for consumers to choose 100% pure petrol at standard prices, and transparent fuel labeling. Currently, ethanol-free fuel is only available as premium 100-octane petrol, which costs around ₹169 per litre in Delhi compared to ₹102.12 for standard E20.
Real-World Action: The online movement is already spilling into the streets. The Delhi Taxi and Tourist Transporters and Tour Operators Association has backed the campaign and announced a physical march to Parliament on August 4 to protest the fuel mandate.
