The Delhi University (DU) admission scene is an absolute mess right now. They rolled out the new one-year PG program under the NEP 2020 framework, but the math is completely broken.
- The Bug: Over 30,000 students are graduating from DU’s inaugural Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). But for the promised one-year Master’s degree, DU only allocated around 1,100 seats across 46 disciplines.
- The Protest: Frustrated students and organizations like ABVP hit the streets outside the Arts Faculty on July 17, demanding an immediate seat hike. Students are saying they invested an extra year, time, and money just to compete for a handful of slots.
- The Patch (Admin Action): To avoid crashing the current admission cycle, DU pushed a quick hotfix—they formed a 6-member high-level committee led by Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. K Ratnabali. They have exactly 10 days to figure out a blueprint to scale up the seats without breaking existing infrastructure and faculty limits.
- Current Status: The dedicated portal for the one-year PG courses opened on July 4, but students are in a holding pattern waiting for the committee’s decision. ABVP has warned they will escalate the protests if the seats aren’t increased soon.
